Captured in the midst of growing inflation in the Netherlands, Bus to Bocholt documents the multi-hour journey of a “Boodschappenbus” (“Grocery bus”), one of several chartered busses used by Dutch residents to travel to the German border town of Bocholt. Here, passengers have just a few hours to spend shopping for cheap groceries, alcohol, and tobacco before returning home by the late evening. Despite the 40 euro ticket price and the majority of the day spent on the road, those struggling with the rising cost of living see the value of this day trip, with several fellow passengers already booking their next journey before returning home.

Drawing inspiration from Martin Parr’s 1989 photo series One Day Trip, combined with a personal fascination of the phenomenon, Bus to Bocholt examines how similar circumstances continue to take place, even some nearly 40 years after Parr’s original series.
